TROY — Northmont’s senior Christian Champen set a new meet record in the pole vault Friday at Troy High School by clearing 16-feet.

“In all my 25 years of coaching I have not had a more talented athletic high school kid than Christian Champen,” said Northmont Pole Vault Coach Steve Heinrichs. “His ability to know where his body is when he is off the ground has given him an awareness to be able to jump as high as he has so far.”

Champen broke Northmont’s former school record by clearing 15-feet, 8-inches a few weeks ago, and the following week cleared 15-feet, 9-inches and at GWOC went 16-feet to set a new school and conference meet record. Heinrichs hopes to see Champen go even high at the district meet at Wayne High School this week.

Champen’s effort ties A.J. Frens of Greenville with having the highest vault in the state so far this year. Frens cleared 16-feet earlier this season.

“Hopefully I will be able to report after he jumps at Wayne that he has gone high than 16-feet, which would then make him Number 1 in the state,” Heinrichs added.

Overall the Northmont boys team placed 5th in the GWOC Central with 74 points. Northmont placed 7th in the 3200 relay (Ethan Shade, Shawn Richards, Xavier Marable and Gage Beireis) in 8:22.33.
