CLAYTON — Demolition of the old Northmont High School is well under way with about half of the school demolished as of late Wednesday.

The newest classroom part of the high school that was dedicated in 1974 along Crestway Drive is not much more than a skeleton now with its exterior walls torn off.

About two-thirds of the main structure that faces National Road is now gone. Demolition crews are keeping a constant water spray operating to knock down the dust and any remnants of asbestos that still remain as the demolition takes place.

At the same time the demolition is taking place workers are busy performing renovation work on the old auditorium, which is the only part of the original high school that will remain along with the existing commons and cafeteria areas, which will also undergo renovation to house the ROTC program and the Northmont Secondary Academy, which is planned to be ready for the start of the 2016-17 school year.

Those wishing to save a piece of the old high school can pick up a brick or two, which are being stacked in the northwest corner of the parking lot near the intersection of National Road and Crestway Drive.
