FLOYDS KNOB, IN — Saturday, November 14, the Northmont High School Navy Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (NJROTC) placed third at the first ever Floyd Central Drill Meet held at Floyd Central High School in Floyds Knob, Indiana, across the river from Louisville, Kentucky.
The Thunderbolts won trophies for the following team events: academics, second place; athletics, first place; unarmed IDR, second place; unarmed exhibition, third place; armed exhibition, second place; and color guard, first place.
The highlight of the drill meet is the knockout events. Approximately 225 cadets flooded the drill deck, lining up in a large military formation, and executing stationary drill for individual precision, with more than ten judges swarming through the formation “knocking them out” for failure to execute the movement precisely, until the last man or woman is standing. When the smoke cleared, Northmont cadets, Alison Cornett , Jacob Marshall and Gwen Landes placed first, fourth, and fifth, respectively, in armed knockout while cadet Caylin Hefferon placed first in unarmed knockout.
Twelve schools competed in the drill meet. In addition to Northmont, the schools were Ben Davis High School (Indianapolis, IN), Bloomfield High School (Bloomfield, IN), East Aurora High School (Aurora, IL), Floyd Central High School (Floyds Knobs, IN), Hamilton High School (Hamilton, OH), Jeffersonville High School, (Jeffersonville, IN), New Albany High School (New Albany, IN), Pike High School (Indianapolis, IN), Shawnee High School, (Louisville, KY), Washington High School (Washington, IN), and Zion-Benton High School (Zion, IL). Northmont placed third to Chicago perennial marching teams Zion-Benton (2nd) and East Aurora (1st); overall an outstanding start to Northmont’s varsity marching season.
The Northmont NJROTC cadets will sponsor a Chili Cook-Off on January 9 at 6 p.m. at the Brookville VFW. All are invited to enter the contest or attend the event. For entry information, contact Kelly at (937) 672-6875.
