DAYTON — Englewood donor Jim Weisner made his milestone 100th lifetime blood donation Friday, Nov. 6 while his bride Nancy of 46 years waited from him nearby in the Dayton Community Blood Center Donor Café. The accomplishment gave them both reason to reflect on milestones in their lives together, dating back to the beginning of Jim’s journey.

“It was after you came back from Vietnam,” Nancy said about Jim’s first donation. “You had to wait because of the medications.”

“That’s right,” said Jim. “We took malaria pills over there and I couldn’t donate right away.”

The indelible memory is how much Jim wanted to donate. He went to Vietnam at the age of 22.

“I was a forward observer in field artillery for three months,” he said. When he came home, he wanted to help others. “I thought it would be a nice community service.”

Jim and Nancy were married just before he left for the Vietnam War. They raised two children and have four grandchildren. Jim studied at Wright State University and became a registered nurse. While in school he began working for UPS and kept the job for 44 years, while also working as a nurse.

He retired after 26 years with St. Elizabeth’s Hospital where he put his nursing skills to use helping orthopedic patients. It gave him a daily sense of the value of blood donations and inspired him to keep donating.

“In the orthopedic unit we gave a lot of blood, especially broken hip surgeries,” he said.

Jim tried on his new CBC “Donor for Life – 100 LTD” jacket and Nancy gave final approval on the fit. Jim began his milestone journey with Nancy’s support and they continue it together.
