CLAYTON — Solid perimeter shooting Wednesday wasn’t enough to carry Northmont’s girls varsity basketball team when undefeated Lebanon came to town.
The Lady Bolts hit eight shots from 3-point range during the contest but it wasn’t enough to overcome Lebanon’s one-two punch of Rachel Perry and Alexis Straw. Perry scored 25 and Straw had 20 to help lead the Lady Warriors to a 74-60 victory.
Northmont did not “Fear the Spear,” Lebanon’s slogan, and battled hard to take a three point lead by the end of the first quarter. Salena Roberts scored six points during the first quarter to lead the Lady Bolts attack. Erin Mangen nailed a 3-pointer at the end of the first period to put Northmont on top 19-16.
The Lady Bolts played tough defense and grabbed some key defensive rebounds in the second quarter to keep Lebanon in check. Jenna Hoschouer (13 points) buried a trey and scored another basket inside and Roberts scored a pair of baskets to keep Northmont close as Lebanon took a 33-28 lead at the half.
Straw and Perry combined to score 15 third quarter points as Lebanon built a 40-29 midway through the third period and led 53-44 entering the fourth quarter.
Erin Mangen buried a 3-pointer to open the fourth to pull the Lady Bolts to within six points and Roberts drew a foul and sank one of two from the charity stripe to make it a five point game, but from that point on Lebanon began to pull away. Perry scored a pair of baskets and Sydney Hanna (13 points) and Straw scored to put Lebanon up 63-48 with just over five minutes remaining. Hanna came up with a steal and scored to boost the Lady Warriors’ lead to 19 and Northmont never recovered.
With the victory Lebanon improved to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in National West Division play while Northmont fell to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the National West.
“Overall we are shooting very well as a team from the outside. We are getting the opportunities, but basketball is a game of runs and Lebanon had two really good runs at the end of the game and that kind of solidified it for them,” said Northmont Coach Bethany Kincer. “We couldn’t capitalize when we got offensive rebounds and they did every time. They got to the free throw line a lot of times tonight and they put them in.”
Lebanon converted 17 of 23 free throws while Northmont made only 11 trips to the line and converted four.
“Straw and Perry are two very solid athletes and good players,” Kincer added. “We knew that and they got their shots and capitalized, got to the line and put their free throws in and that led to their pair of runs in the fourth quarter and it sank us.”
Makayla Cooper, Hoschouer and Roberts each scored 13 points to lead the Northmont attack.
The Lady Bolts will host Springboro on Saturday at 1 p.m. and travel to Bellbrook on Monday for a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
