CLAYTON — Northmont’s boys varsity golf team Thursday hosted Fairmont on the front nine at Meadowbrook at Clayton Golf Course with the Firebirds emerging with a 16 stroke victory, 168-184.

Cameron Luczka of Fairmont led all scorers with a low round of 38. Sophomore Alec Avdakov led the Thunderbolts with a career best low score of 40. Avdakov’s round included back to back birdies on holes five and six.

“Alec is the first Thunderbolt golfer to threaten to break the coveted 40 barrier this season,” said Northmont Coach Nathan Hannahan.

Sophomore Noah Thayer finished with a 46 while junior Cole Stephens and freshman Gavin Caras each finished with a 49 to round out the team scoring. Sophomore Jackson Trottier shot a 50 and sophomore David Richards added a 51.

Tuesday the Thunderbolts played their first home match of the season at Meadowbrook against Troy. The Trojans pulled out a 170-179 victory on the rain soaked course. The rain let up just before the 4 p.m. tee time.

“The greens held up considerably well while both teams struggled to find dry lies in the thick rough and saturated fairways,” Hannahan noted.

Troy’s Holden Scribner topped the leader board with six over par 41. Avdakov led the Thunderbolts with a 43 while sophomore David Richards and junior Cole Stephens posted rounds of 46. Sophomore Jackson Trottier finished with a 47 and sophomore Noah Thayer shot a 49.

“As the scores came in we knew we were close to upsetting the favored Trojans who have established themselves as a powerhouse contender in the GWOC conference over the past several seasons,” Hannahan added. “Although we were not victorious tonight, we proved that we are primed to compete with the best that the GWOC conference has to offer this season.”

The Thunderbolts will participate Tuesday at the Dianna Schwab Mixed Invitational featuring boys and girls teams and hosted by Fairmont High School at Beavercreek Golf Club.
