CLAYTON — In the second round of the Division 1 softball sectional tournament Northmont cruised to an 11-1 win over visiting Stebbins.

The Lady Bolts tallied 11 hits, including doubles by Cory Mangen and Lizzy Ritchie. Pitcher Mallory Woods scattered five hits in five innings to earn the sectional win.

But the game was far from a Mona Lisa.

“It was ugly,” said Northmont coach Chris Mangen

A total of four errors were committed, only one by the Lady Bolts. At the plate, four Northmont batters were hit by pitches. Five more walked. Three of the squad’s 11 runs were scored from third on wild pitches.

The home team took a quick 1-0 lead in the first after Cory Mangen doubled home lead-off hitter Courtney Jasinski after she walked on five pitches. Whitney Fiedler was hit by a pitch and Woods singled. Erin Mangen’s infield single plated two runs as the Lady Bolts increased their lead to 3-0.

After scoring single runs in the second and third innings for a 5-0 lead, the team scored twice in the fourth and fifth for a 9-0 advantage as Cory Mangen and Fiedler collected RBI hits.

Mallory Woods surrendered a single and no runs before giving way to Fiedler in the sixth inning. Fiedler surrendered two hits, including a line drive toward the mound that hit Fiedler, knocking the wind out of her and dropping her to the ground. She recovered after a few minutes and rose to her feet.

After a few practice pitches she gave up a run on a fielder’s choice before retiring the side.

With a 9-1 lead in the bottom of the sixth, the Lady Bolts rallied for two runs to capture the mercy rule victory. Woods and Emily Ritchie walked. Lizzy Ritchie singled in a run. The winning run scored on a wild pitch.

Improving to 25-3, the Lady Bolts are scheduled to play Troy on Monday at 5 p.m. at Beavercreek Middle School.
