CLAYTON — Senior pitcher Whitney Fiedler dominated visiting West Carrollton in the opening round of the D-1 softball sectional.

Tossing a two-hit shutout Wednesday, Fiedler fanned four and walked one batter over four innings as the Lady Bolts defeated the Pirates 10-0 in a four-and-a-half inning game

“I was really ready to play,” Fiedler said. “I felt good right from the start of the game.”

Improving her record to 10-1, she preserved the shutout with clutch pitching in the top of the fourth inning. With runners on second and third with two outs, she retired the final out in the fourth on a routine ground ball.

Fiedler also contributed at the plate. Batting clean-up, she collected two singles and a long double that drove in lead-off hitter Courtney Jasinski, who had walked. Cory Mangen had two extra-base hits, a double in the first inning and a two-run home run to right center in the second inning.

“I just try to hit the ball hard,” Mangen said.

Leading 5-0 after two innings, the home team stretched its lead to a 10-0 bulge with a five-run third inning as the squad batted around. Adding to the 11-hit assault for Northmont was Anna Mangen and Emily Ritchie, who both doubled and singled in the mercy-rule victory.

Cassy Lewis pitched the fifth inning, popping up two Pirates and inducing an easy infield groundout to end the shortened contest.

Chris Mangen, now in her 20th season as the Lady Bolts coach, said she was “happy with the way we played today.”

As the number two seed, Northmont improved its record to 23-3. The team’s next sectional opponent is Stebbins in a game slated for Thursday, May 12.
