CLAYTON — Northmont led by as many as seven points in the fourth quarter Friday against Chaminade-Julienne but ended up losing in overtime 77-71.

With the win the Eagles improved to 10-1 overall while the Thunderbolts fell to 5-4.

Jason Biggs, who scored a game-high 35 points, sank a pair of free throws with 17 seconds left in regulation to tie the score and send the game into overtime, but a series of ball handling mistakes in the 4-minute overtime proved costly for Northmont.

On their first possession in overtime the Thunderbolts turned the ball over and P’Hariz Watkins took the ball in for a layup to put C-J up 62-60. Miles Joiner blocked Northmont’s next shot and Christian Montogue got fouled as he drove the paint. He sank both shots to boost the Eagles’ lead to 64-60. Northmont appeared too tense and turned the ball over again with Joiner scoring on the miscue to extend C-J’s lead to six points.

Jarell Taylor tried to score inside for the Thunderbolts and drew a foul. Taylor sank both free throws and Arius Spears knocked down a pair from the charity stripe after getting intentionally fouled. Rodney Richardson added a basket and Biggs hit his fifth 3-pointer of the night to cut the Eagles’ lead to 71-69.

C-J added a pair of free throws by Watkins and got baskets by Joiner and Montogue in the final 90 seconds to secure the 77-71 victory.

“We’ve lost two games that we probably should have won and it’s a matter of making free throws,” said Northmont Coach Collin Abels. “We just talked to the guys about that. When you have a lead and you make those free throws it demoralizes the opposing team because they see the score getting further and further away. When a team does start to make a run and if you make those free throws it kind of extends your momentum a little bit and gets things back in your favor. Little things make the big things happen.”

It was a disappointing loss for Northmont, which battled back from a 37-29 third quarter deficit to take a 50-46 lead entering the fourth period. The third quarter rally was led by Biggs, who gunned in a trio of 3-pointers.

The Thunderbolts hit only five of 10 shots from the free throw line in the crucial fourth quarter when they had the chance to put the game away and ended up 16-29 at the line for the evening.

“Tonight I challenged the players at halftime to come out and do the things we asked them to do and they did a great job, got a lead but in overtime I thought those little things ended up being costly to us,” Abels added.

C-J snared 45 rebounds, 20 offensive, while Northmont hauled in 32 boards, 15 offensive. C-J scored 23 points as the result of turnovers while Northmont scored 17 off turnovers.

Tuesday the Thunderbolts will host Springboro and on Friday host Beavercreek. Both games start at 7:30 p.m.
