FAIRBORN — Northmont’s varsity wrestling team turned in another strong performance Dec. 28-29 at the Greater Miami Valley Wrestling Coaches Association annual Holiday Tournament at Wright State’s Ervin J. Nutter Center.

The Thunderbolts placed sixth place out of the 57 team field with 108 points. Only a point or so separated Northmont from Centerville, Lakota West and Springboro in the final rounds.

“I thought this year would be kind of a rebuilding year for us with five freshmen, but they have wrestled a lot more mature than their age,” said Northmont Coach Scott Newburg. “All but a couple of guys have scored points for us to allow us to get up to the top of the tournament standings. We are actually at a better place this year than we were last year when we had four or five seniors on the team. Our goal was to make it into the top ten and it looks like we could finish anywhere from seventh to fourth place. The kids have done a great job all the way through the tournament and we had six guys make it to the second day.”

One of the freshmen, Gabe Newburg (182 pounds), scored a 14-4 major decision over Davin Snyder of Troy to take seventh place.

“Gabe is the first freshman that we’ve ever had place in this tournament, especially in the 182 pound weight class,” Newburg commented. “He did a great job winning his last match 14-4.”

Two Northmont wrestlers made it to the championship match and ended up taking second place. Chad Craft (113 pounds) lost a close 2-1 decision to Jeffrey Thomas of Graham while Chase Craft (120 pounds) lost an 11-4 decision to another Graham standout, Justin Stickley.

In the semifinal round Chad Craft scored an 11-5 decision over Tanner Yenter of Campbell County. In the quarterfinal round Craft scored a 16-2 major decision over Ryan Whitten of Stebbins.

Chase Craft scored a 6-4 decision over Michael Sergent of Troy Christian in the semifinals and in the quarterfinals scored a 6-1 decision over A.J. Warner of Fairborn.

“Chad and Chase both wrestled well losing to kids from Graham in the finals,” Newburg said. “Both of those were tough matches against state placers last year. It’s hard to come up against those kinds of kids. Both Craft brothers did well and scored a lot of points for us.”

Another freshman Hunter Terrill (138 pounds) scored a pin (1:39) over Justin Berry of Tecumseh in the fourth consolation round and also pinned (0:55) Matt Tatman of Kenton Ridge in the third consolation round. In the second round of consolation Terrill scored a 5-3 decision over Mike Schoenleb or Olentangy Orange.

“Terrill wrestled well for a freshman just missing placing by two matches,” Newburg praised. “He did a great job as did Luke Holloway and Weston Hoening, who won his first two matches. Everybody scored points for us to allow us to get to the point where we are at right now. This is something we can build off of and I am really excited about what we can achieve the rest of the year.”
