CLAYTON — Speed and quickness continues to be one of the Northmont varsity basketball team’s greatest assets. Saturday against Troy the Thunderbolts came up with 14 steals and forced the Trojans into 19 turnovers during Northmont’s 69-53 win.

Twelve of Northmont’s 13 players scored during the victory. Jason Biggs led the Thunderbolts with 14 points followed by Rodney Richardson with 13 and Jarell Taylor with 12. Romello Yaqub and Mechia Linton paced Troy with 12 each and Austin Funderburg had 11.

Northmont’s defense forced three turnovers and came up with a steal in the back court by Myles Tanner that Jabari Perkins converted into a basket as the Thunderbolts jumped out to a 16-5 advantage by the end of the first stanza. Jason Biggs buried a 3-pointer at the end of the period.

Troy stayed within striking distance at the half as the Thunderbolts held a 33-22 lead at the break. Northmont used a balanced eight man scoring attack in the third quarter to open up an 18 point lead entering the fourth quarter. The Trojans clawed back into the game cutting Northmont’s lead to nine points 56-47 on runs of 6-0 and 5-0 before the Thunderbolts pulled away to post the 16 point win.

“We had an 18 point lead going into the fourth quarter and I think the group that started that quarter got a little lackadaisical and Troy made a little run on us,” said Northmont Coach Collin Abels. “They weren’t bringing it effort wise, and that’s the nice thing about having a deep team. If I could of I would have subbed five for five but I only had four guys available, so I put four new faces in and they ended up responding. And like you said, we had a nice little stretch there where we put the game back away.”

Abels was also happy to see Rodney Richardson starting to assert himself at the point guard position. Richardson had 19 points against West Carrollton and 13 against Troy.

“Richardson is really coming on, and the nice thing is that we feel that we have two very good point guards in Myles Tanner and Rodney Richardson,” Abels said. “They bring us different things but it’s kind of nice to have that. Richardson has really come along in practice. He’s practicing really well. It’s good when kids practice well and then have success in the game, because it firms up in their mind that that’s what they need to do and it’s the right thing to do.”
