TROY — All five Northmont tennis players that competed in the sectional finals Saturday at Troy qualified for district play, which begins Thursday, Oct. 8 at the ATP (Lindner Family Tennis Center) in Mason at 9 a.m.

All three singles players advanced, Akilah Parker, Marissa Anderson, and Kennedy Harden, and the doubles team of Morgan Grandfield and Michelle Hibbard.

“Although it is not uncommon for teams to have multiple players advance this far, it is uncommon to have all three singles players from the same school make it to the semifinals and qualify for district,” said Northmont Coach Chrissy Hall. “This made for some interesting match-ups between teammates that ultimately resulted in a Sectional Championship for one of them, senior Akilah Parker.”

Parker, the No. 1 seed in the Sectional defeated Thuy Nguyen from Stebbins and Ashley Hess from Butler to advance to the semifinals where she faced teammate Marissa Anderson. Parker defeated Anderson 6-4, 6-3 in a hard fought match in the semifinals and went on to defeat Hannah Essick of Troy 7-5, 6-0 in the finals.

Earlier in the tournament Anderson defeated Alison Baker from Butler before upsetting the No. 4 seed Karli Mulkey from Tecumseh. Anderson then secured a spot in the semifinals with a win over Jenna Demeter from Springfield.

Harden defeated Madison Frank of Sidney before knocking off No. 3 seed Madison Peyton from Butler. Harden continued her winning ways by defeating Brooklyn Hunter of Fairborn to advance.

Anderson and Harden faced each other next to determine 3rd and 4th place. Anderson won 6-2, 6-2.

On the doubles side, Grandfield and Hibbard lost in the semifinals to Troy’s team of Hennesy and Bruns, but they defeated Troy’s other doubles team Scancarello and VerStraten 6-4, 6-0 for a 3rd place finish.
