LWV plans trip to birthplace of women’s rights movement

DAYTON — In the run-up to its 100th anniversary in 2020, the League of Women Voters of Greater Dayton is planning a chartered bus trip to the birthplace of the United States’ women’s rights movement in Seneca Falls, NY.

“Our organization was formed just prior to women’s suffrage becoming the law of the land,” said Susan Hesselgesser, executive director of the local league. “But the drive toward suffrage and increased rights for women started long before that. When two of the movement’s founders – Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony – formed a friendship in Seneca Falls in the mid-1800s, the world would never be the same.”

Seneca Falls boasts a national park and a hall of fame dedicated to the history of the women’s rights movement. Said Hesselgesser, “We always say that today, we’re the women we are because of the women they were. Countless women struggled for decades to win the rights we now sometimes take for granted.”

The bus will leave Dayton in the early morning hours of October 28. After spending the afternoon and night in Seneca Falls, the group will go to nearby Rochester, NY the following morning. There, they will tour the Susan B. Anthony House before returning to Dayton on the 29th.

“It’s a beautiful time of year to drive to the Finger Lakes region of New York. After learning more about the dedicated women who went before us, I suspect we’ll all come back inspired in our work for an informed electorate,” said Hesselgesser.
