ENGLEWOOD — Evalene Haggerty, a resident of Brookdale Englewood Senior Living Solutions, celebrated her 100th birthday Thursday, July 16 surrounded by family and friends.

“Thanks to every one for showing up today. This is a great turnout for a very, very, special occasion,”

said Charlie Thompson, executive director of Brookdale Englewood. “Evalene has been a resident of our community since 2005. She has touched a lot of lives. As most you know, and to everyone who works here, she is ‘Grandma.’ That’s how everyone refers to her, so it’s a very special day.”

Thompson presented Haggerty with a plaque in commemoration of her 100-year milestone and a letter from T. Andrew Smith, CEO of Brookdale Senior Living Solutions.

The letter stated in part, “Dear Evalene, It is my privilege to represent the entire Brookdale family in sharing best wishes on this milestone occasion of your 100th birthday. You have influenced countless other people throughout your long life and I am pleased that you continue to do so within our community. Brookdale’s magic comes from the small bonds that our residents and their family members build with our associates, and your unique experiences are a big part of what makes your community unique and special.”

Smith’s letter also noted that Haggerty is a member of ‘The Greatest Generation,’ the Americans who came of age during the Great Depression and World War II and who went on to play a role in building our modern country.

“As such, you have played a role in significant historical challenges and achievements of the size and pace other generations have not yet experienced,” Smith’s letter stated. “I personally want to thank you for this because of the positive impact for our country as a whole.”

Everyone joined in to sing happy birthday and enjoyed birthday cake, punch and other treats following the ceremony. Afterward everyone gathered outside to release 100 balloons into the air to conclude the celebration.
