DAYTON — Get outside, do a good deed for your community, enjoy a day on the water, and enjoy free pizza. What could make for a better way to spend a Friday?

Help the Montgomery Soil and Water Conservation District on Friday, June 10 at its Stillwater River Clean-up from 8:30 a.m. until noon (rain date is June 17). Canoes, all the gear, trash bags, a group of like-minded individuals and pizza will be provided. Volunteers provide the hard work and elbow grease to get the trash out of the river.

The clean-up will start at the Englewood Dam but you must register first before you can participate (see registration info at the end of the article).

The Stillwater River is the area’s local State Scenic River, a beautiful place to fish and canoe or kayak. However, careless littering, and sometimes direct dumping of trash into the river will leave its mark. That’s where volunteers come in.

The Stillwater River, which flows through western Montgomery County and into Downtown Dayton, is known for pretty views and feisty smallmouth bass. It is also one of 11 State Scenic Rivers. Each year, the Montgomery SWCD and a team of businesses, agencies and volunteers (like you) canoe the Stillwater Scenic River to keep it beautiful.

Due to the careless, thoughtless actions of a few, there is trash in our beautiful river. Over the years MSWCD have removed literally tons of litter. For this free event MSWCD provides the canoes and supplies. Delicious pizza donated by Pizza Factory will be waiting for volunteers at the end of their journey. Come help the river be the scenic and inviting retreat that it can be by pulling trash from the river to dispose of (or recycle) correctly. This can be a strenuous event, so come prepared by dressing properly for the weather and wearing close-toed, thick soled shoes.

Partners that help make this event possible include the Cities of Clayton & Englewood, Five Rivers MetroParks, the Montgomery County Solid Waste District, Pizza Factory, and Rivers Unlimited.

For more information visit www.MontgomerySWCD.org, and call or email Kristen Lauer at (937) 854-7645, LauerK@mcohio.org to register. Spots are limited, so please register by June 8 to save your spot on a canoe.
