ENGLEWOOD — Recently, the Northmont Rotary was privileged to hear from Carol Hughes, the director of the regional Rotary district’s Rotary Youth Leadership Award (RYLA) program.

RYLA was started in Australia in the early 1960s with the purpose to recognize, encourage, and educate youth leaders. The award entitles the recipient(s) to participate in the annual RYLA camp as a guest of their local Rotary Club. It is a 48 hour intensive youth leadership training experience led by highly trained, experienced leaders representing a wide range of vocations. They encourage, through motivational talks, group projects, and team building exercises continued and stronger leadership of youth by youth.

In giving the youth leadership tools and experience, the hope is to prepare future leaders. The recipients are local sophomore and junior high school students and are sponsored by Northmont Rotary (and others) for the annual camp which is held at Camp Kern.

The club meets at noon each Tuesday at Samaritan North Health Center, 9000 N. Main St., Englewood.
