DAYTON — During the upcoming Labor Day holiday 35.5 million Americans are planning to travel at least 50 miles from home during the 5-day holiday period that runs from Thursday, September 3 until Monday, September 7.

More than 85 percent (30.4 million) plan to travel by automobile. This year 2.64 million plan to travel by air, the highest air travel volume since 2007. AAA projects more than 1.5 million people from Ohio will journey at least 50 miles or more from home for Labor Day Weekend.

“More than 88 percent plan to travel by automobile,” said AAA Public Affairs Manager, Cindy Antrican.

Gas Prices

Most U.S. drivers will pay the lowest gas prices since 2004 for the busy Labor Day weekend. Today’s national average price of gas is $2.44 per gallon, which is 99 cents per gallon less than a year ago. Miami Valley area drivers are paying an average of $2.29 per gallon today, down 34 cents from a week ago, 13 cents from a month ago and $1.26 from a year ago. U.S. consumers should save more than $1 billion on gasoline over the holiday weekend compared to 2014, with many drivers saving about $15-$25 on every trip to the gas station.

Drivers can use AAA’s Fuel Gauge Report to find the lowest-priced fuel at home, across the state or nationwide. Plot your most fuel efficient route on your next trip. AAA’s Fuel Cost calculator allows you to input your start and destination city, make & model of your car and then show about how much you will spend on gas.

Vehicle Maintenance

Proper auto maintenance is key to avoiding a breakdown this weekend. Over Labor Day weekend in 2014, AAA’s Roadside Rescue Team responded to more than 1,300 calls for assistance from stranded Miami Valley area motorists, including 645 calls for tows, 155 for tire service and 265 calls for battery problems. With weekend temperatures projected to reach nearly 90 degree AAA urges motorists to check their vehicle batteries, fluid levels, tires, belts and hoses before hitting the road.
